Tirreno-Adriatico 2022 – Stage 1 preview

The Route
Unlike it’s traditional format, Tirreno-Adriatico this year has it’s individual time-trial at the start of the race, which is set to open up some interesting gaps right away and put some order in the peloton before the tougher stages.
On the opening day things are pretty simple, Lido Di Camaiore will host the stage, the course has 14.1Km in distance and is pan-flat, also with very little technical features. An ideal place for the pure time-trialists to put in the power and fight for the win.
The Weather
A slight breeze from the west. I don’t think it’ll favour anyone, but it will make for perhaps more challenging conditions than the riders expect, every single second will count.
The Favourites
Filippo Ganna – World time-trial champion. Will the wind affect him? It has in the past, but I think the conditions won’t put any barrier to his performance, the course is ideal for him I’d say.
Kasper Asgreen – After a slower start to the season Asgreen as shown good form for the first time this weekend at Strade Bianche. With him back in form, he’s also a dangerous card for this stage, if he’s recovered.
Remco Evenepoel – His Volta ao Algarve performance was crazy, however this is a very different time-trial. He does have the legs to win though…
Edoardo Affini – Perhaps a wildcard but definitely a contender for the win, a true powerhouse in a team that knows all about time-trialing finesse.
Tadej Pogacar – With the form he’s got, who knows. His time-trial at the UAE was according to him his best ever 10-minute effort, it won’t be too different here and for sure he’ll be eyeing taking as much time as possible to his rivals.
Furthermore there will be some more outsiders looking for a strong result. It’s a day for the purists, riders like Mikkel Bjerg, Maciej Bodnar, Benjamin Thomas or Thibault Guernalec can surely succeed. Nelson Oliveira, Matteo Sobrero, Thymen Arensman can also do well, other GC riders like Jonas Vingegaard, Julian Alaphilippe or an outsider like Magnus Cort Nielsen can do quite well in the first places aswell if they’re on a good day.
