Vuelta a España 2016 – Stage 21 Preview

By David Hunter

Las Rozas – Madrid 104.1km

v21a

Last stage!

v21

After a brilliant three weeks, we end with a sprint in Madrid.

The Finish

v21b

It’s the usual end to the race, with the big turn coming before the final kilometre. This is a nice stage for the sprinters.

Contenders

Gianni Meersman – two stages is a great result for him. He has a very good lead-out, but they got it wrong last time out. Etixx rarely get it wrong twice, so expect to see them in the closing kilometres. Can he take stage number three?

Nikias Arndt – Giant really stepped up in the last sprint, but Arndt hesitated and lost the win. The German needs to forget about everyone else and have some confidence in his own ability.

Jempy Drucker – will be pleased with his stage win, but sprinters are always greedy for more! He can handle himself in the last kilometre, but isn’t quite as fast as the others. To win the stage, he’ll need a little luck. He was 3rd here in 2015.

Magnus Cort Nielsen – took a fantastic win on Thursday. He is a talented young man, just wait for next year. Has a good chance of taking another win.

Daniele Bennati – the veteran still has what it takes. It would be magnificent to see him taking the win.

Prediction Time

I’ve stuck by him all race and think he’ll get it right in Madrid. Giant have the best lead-out and Nikias Arndt will take the stage.

Final Word

That’s the end of another grand tour. A massive thank you to all who read my previews, it really does mean an awful lot to us. Another huge thank you to Pablo, it must be hard translating Scottish into Spanish! Vamos!
